Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility and Requesting an Application:

Is our organization eligible to apply for a grant or loan? (top)

The Raskob Foundation accepts applications only from official Catholic, tax-exempt, non-profit organizations. Per the Foundation's Charter, requests by or for individuals cannot be honored. Within the United States, Catholic organizations are recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as those listed in the most recent edition of the Official Catholic Directory, published annually by P.J. Kenedy & Sons. For tax-exempt, charitable organizations not listed in the Kenedy Directory, the Foundation will accept an application for consideration only if it is submitted by an official Catholic organization that is financially supporting the project for which funds are being sought. If a grant were then approved by our Board of Trustees, payment would be made to the Catholic organization, which in turn could assign the funds to the project that it is already financially supporting. Outside the United States, the Raskob Foundation only accepts applications from Catholic dioceses, Catholic parishes, Catholic schools, Catholic hospitals and Catholic religious congregations. Under special circumstances applications from certain Catholic NGO’s can also be considered. (click here for special instructions)

How can our organization apply for a grant or loan? (top)

Qualified organizations can apply for a grant or loan in three ways:

  1. Submit an application online – this option allows you to establish an account to create, save, submit and track your application(s) via our website.
  2. Download an application – this option allows you to download and print our application form in PDF format. If you choose this option, your application must be submitted via postal mail or express delivery service. To submit electronically you must use the online option #1 above.
  3. Request an application by mail - Submit a written request to the Foundation, on the stationery of the Catholic organization that will apply, via postal mail or fax. Upon eligibility determination, a hard copy application package will be sent to you via postal mail. Please direct your written request for an application to: Mr. Frederick J. Perella, Jr. Executive Vice President Raskob Foundation PO Box 4019 Wilmington, DE 19807

When can our organization request an application package? (top)

Requests for application packages by mail are accepted at any time. Hard copy application packages are sent to applicants through 1st Class U.S. domestic mail or normal international mail. You can also download an application package and access our online application at any time. However, with our online option although you may work on and save your application at any time, you may only submit the application during our application acceptance windows of December 8th - February 8th and June 8th – August 8th.

Do we have to request a new application package each time we want to apply? (top)

Yes, if you are requesting a hard copy application by mail. In this case, a new written request must be submitted each time you apply. Applications requested by mail are assigned a unique tracking number for correspondence and reporting purposes.

Submission Requirements and Deadlines for Applications:

May we generate an application form using our computer in place of the hard copy version? (top)

Yes. However, the form must conform to both the size and layout (sections/questions) of the Foundation’s Application Form. The applicant generated form cannot consist of more than 2 pages and should be submitted on 8 ½’’ x 11’’ white paper.

What are the deadlines for submission of proposals? (top)

Our Board of Trustees meets twice a year to review applications – in mid-May and late November. Applications may only be submitted between December 8th and February 8th for our mid-May Meeting and between June 8th and August 8th for our late November Meeting. Applications that arrive outside of these time periods will not be considered or saved for the next meeting.

The Foundation DOES NOT ACCEPT applications for the following purposes:

  1. Tuition, Scholarships or Fellowships
  2. Endowment Funds
  3. Grants made by other grant making organizations
  4. Reduction of Debt
  5. Individual Scholarly Research
  6. Legislative Advocacy or Lobbying
  7. Projects completed prior to our Board Meetings in mid-May and late November

Are there any other restrictions? (top)

Yes, concerning Construction Projects. In general, requests to fund large construction projects have a low priority with the Raskob Foundation.Building or Renovation Projects costing over $200,000 are not accepted for consideration until:

  • 50% of the total cost is in hand. (Monies pledged but not actually received or contractually committed do not satisfy this requirement.)
  • A signed construction contract is in existence.
  • Construction is actually underway.

Where and to whom do we send our completed proposal? (top)

If you are using our online option, you will submit your application electronically via our website. If you are using an application downloaded from our website or sent to you hard copy by mail, please send your completed proposal to: Mr. Frederick J. Must the completed application form and supporting documentation be received or postmarked by the deadline date? (top)

They must be received by the deadline date. Applications being submitted via postal mail or express delivery service must be received at the Foundation's Office by the deadline dates to be eligible for consideration. When February 8 or August 8 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is 5 PM of the previous business day (Monday-Friday). Due to increasing volume, we cannot guarantee that applications received in the last week of these time periods will be processed for the docket. We urge Applicants to submit applications as early as possible in each time period. If you are using our online option, although you can work on and save your application at any time, it can only be submitted during our application acceptance windows of December 8th - February 8th and June 8th – August 8th. The “submit” button will be inactive all other times of the year.

How will we know if you have received our completed application and supporting documentation? (top)

  • Applicants who have included email addresses in their proposals will receive notification via email when their applications have arrived at our offices and, subsequently, when eligibility has been determined.
  • Applicants who have not supplied email addresses will not receive notification that their applications have arrived at our offices, however will be notified via postal mail after eligibility has been determined.
  • Applicants submitting proposals electronically have the additional option of logging into their account on the Foundation’s website to view the status of their application(s).

What is “a Letter from the Ordinary of the diocese where the project will take place”? (top)

It is a letter from the Cardinal, Archbishop or Bishop of the Diocese where the project will be carried out, commenting on your application to the Raskob Foundation. Letters from Auxiliary Bishops or Department Heads do not satisfy this requirement. In the case of religious orders not under the jurisdiction of an Ordinary, the Provincial, Abbot or Superior is asked to send a letter to the Ordinary where the project will take place informing him about the application. A copy of this letter to the Ordinary may be submitted to the Foundation in place of a letter from the Ordinary himself. NOTE: The most common error is the Provincial, Abbot or Superior directing their letter to the Raskob Foundation instead of the Ordinary.

What is a Narrative? (top)

A narrative should follow the general outline of the application form, but explain points in greater detail. It may also include any other information that you feel is important. (Preferably not to exceed 5 pages.)

What is a Budget? (top)

A budget is a detailed breakdown of the cost elements and sources of income of the program/project for which funds are being requested. The requested Raskob grant should be included among the income items.

What is a Financial Statement (for U.S. Applicants)? (top)

A financial statement is the latest official 12-month accounting of the organization. It should list the organization's Statement of Financial Position (*assets/ liabilities), and Statement of Activities (*income/expenses). This can best be provided by sending the latest 12-month audited financial statements, including all notes to financial statements and supporting schedules. If audited statements are not available, the most recent, unaudited in-house statements of the organization will satisfy this requirement.

  • Assets - Listing or value of current monetary assets (cash—checking/savings, accounts receivable, investment portfolios, scholarship funds, endowment funds, etc.) and fixed assets (buildings, land, furnishings, equipment, vehicles and the like). Liabilities - Monies currently owed or future commitments (accounts payable, mortgages, loans, credit cards, outstanding payroll/benefits, etc.).
  • Income and the sources of income (tuition, fees, collections, grants, donations, government programs, rentals, dividends, etc.) Expenses - Salaries, transportation, utilities, maintenance/ rent, office supplies, program costs and the like.

NOTE:

Applicants frequently omit their fixed assets. This is required, even if the fixed assets are owned by a parent corporation (parish, diocese, bishop sole, religious order, consolidated health system, etc.). If you don’t have this information on hand or are having a difficult time acquiring it, the insurance value of such fixed assets would satisfy the requirement. If you are a private organization or fund-raising Foundation, making application for a parent organization, the Financial Statements of both organizations are required.

Funding and Timing:

What is the average grant? (top)

Requests for aid far exceed the dollars available. The Foundation follows a philosophy of stretching its funds to help as many different Catholic activities as possible. Please see our listings of grants approved for further details about the range and type of grants made by the Foundation.

What are the Foundation’s funding priorities?(top)

The Foundation has no official funding priorities. However, the Raskob Foundation takes particular interest in projects in which self-help and local support are demonstrated. Applications to the Foundation are considered on their merits. Need, timeliness and the good to be accomplished are prime considerations.

When will we be notified of the Foundation's decisions? (top)

We notify our applicants as promptly as possible. Board decisions of our mid-May meeting are generally processed by the end of June. Board decisions of our late November meeting are generally processed by the end of December.

General

Can we meet with a representative of the Foundation to discuss our proposal? (top)

Meetings or phone conversations with staff of the Foundation may be requested and, if feasible, will be arranged. In some cases, meetings with family members of the Foundation are also possible. However, the personal schedules and privacy of the family members may limit their ability to participate in meetings. In some cases, family members of the Foundation may request a meeting or phone conversation when they are reviewing applications.
