Eligibility and Requesting an Application:

Is our organization eligible to apply for a grant or loan?   (top)

The Raskob Foundation accepts applications from official Catholic, tax-exempt, non profit organizations. Per the Foundation's Charter, requests by or for individuals cannot be honored. Within the United States, Catholic organizations are recognized by the IRS as those listed in the most recent edition of the Official Catholic Directory, published annually by P.J. Kenedy & Sons. For tax-exempt, charitable organizations not listed in the Kenedy Directory, the Foundation can accept an application for consideration only if it is submitted by an official Catholic organization that is financially supporting the project for which funds are being sought. If a grant were then approved by our Board of Trustees, payment would be made to the Catholic organization, which in turn could assign the funds to the project that it is already financially supporting.

Outside the United States, the Raskob Foundation accepts applications only from Catholic dioceses, Catholic parishes, Catholic schools, Catholic hospitals and Catholic religious congregations.

How can our organization receive an application package?   (top)

Qualified organizations can obtain an Application Package by submitting a request in writing on the stationery of the Catholic organization that will apply. This written request may be sent via mail or by fax.

When can our organization request an application package?   (top)

Requests for application packages are accepted year round. Application Packages are normally sent to applicants through 1st Class U.S. domestic mail or normal international mail. In cases where an applicant is from a country where mail delivery is very slow or inconsistent, the Foundation will fax an application package. However, during the two-week period prior to submission deadlines, requests to receive an Application Package by fax will be honored only in cases of emergency.

Do we have to request a new application package each time we want to apply?    (top)

Yes, applicants are required to send a new written request each time they wish to apply. Each application is assigned a unique tracking number for correspondence and reporting purposes.

Where and to whom do we send our request for an application?   (top)

Requests for application packages should be directed to:

Mr. Frederick J. Perella, Jr.
Executive Vice President
Raskob Foundation
P.O. Box 4019
Wilmington, DE 19807-0019
Or faxed to (302) 655-3223

Submission Requirements and Deadlines for Applications:

May we submit a computer generated form?   (top)

The Raskob Foundation will accept Computer-Generated Applications. If you use this method instead of filling in the Application Form provided, your submission must conform to both the size and layout of the Foundation's Application Form. All computer-generated applications must be submitted on 8½ x 11 white paper, cannot consist of more than 2 pages and must include the 11-digit tracking number located at the upper left hand corner of the Application Form.

What are the deadlines for submission of proposals?   (top)

Our Board of Trustees meets two times a year to review applications. Applications are accepted between December 8th and February 8th for our Spring Meeting and between June 8th and August 8th for our Fall Meeting.

Are there any fields of activity from which the Foundation will not accept applications?    (top)

The Foundation DOES NOT ACCEPT applications for the following purposes:

1. Reduction of Debt
2. Tuition, Scholarships or Fellowships
3. Endowment Funds
4. Individual Scholarly Research
5. Continuing Subsidies
6. Advocacy, Lobbying or Legislation
7. Projects which are "after-the-fact" (completed) by the date of the Trustees' Meetings
8. Grants made by other grantmakers

Are there any other restrictions I should be aware of?   (top)

Yes. Concerning Construction Projects. In general, requests to fund large construction projects have a low priority with the Raskob Foundation. Building or Renovation Projects costing over $200,000 are not accepted for consideration until:

    • 50% of the total cost is in hand. (Monies pledged but not actually received or contractually committed do not satisfy this requirement.)
    • A signed construction contract is in existence.
    • Construction is actually underway.

Where and to whom do we send our completed proposal?   (top)

Completed application packages should be sent to:

Mr. Frederick J. Perella, Jr.
Executive Vice President
Raskob Foundation
PO Box 4019
Wilmington, DE 19807-0019
Overnight Mail (Street) Address:
10 Montchanin Road
Wilmington, DE 19807

Must the completed application form and supporting documentation be received or postmarked by the deadline date?   (top)

Applications must be received at the Foundation's Office by the Spring or Fall deadline date in order to be eligible for consideration. These deadlines are observed regardless of holidays or weekends. When February 8 or August 8 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is 5 PM of the previous business day. Due to increasing volume, we cannot guarantee that applications received in the last week of these time periods will be processed for the docket. We urge Applicants to submit applications as early as possible in each time period. Applications that arrive either too early or too late for either time period will not be considered, and are not held over for the next docket.

How will we know if you have received our completed application and supporting documentation?   (top)

You will receive notification by mail that your application package and supporting documentation have been received, whether it is eligible for consideration at our upcoming meeting and if there are any items missing from your proposal.

What is a Letter from the Ordinary of the diocese where the project will take place?   (top)

It is simply a letter from the Ordinary (Cardinal, Archbishop or Bishop) of the Diocese where the project will be carried out, commenting on your application to the Raskob Foundation. In the case of religious orders not under the jurisdiction of an Ordinary, the Provincial or Mother Superior is asked to send a letter to the local Ordinary (where the project will take place) informing him about the application. A copy of this letter to the Ordinary may be submitted to the Foundation in lieu of a letter from the diocesan Ordinary.

What is a Narrative?    (top)

A narrative should follow the general outline of the application form, but explain points in greater detail. It may also include any other information that you feel is important. (Not to exceed 5 typewritten pages.)

What is a Budget?    (top)

A separate, detailed breakdown of the cost elements and sources of income of the program/project for which funds are being requested. The requested Raskob grant should be included among the income items.

What is a Financial Statement?    (top)

The latest official 12-month financial accounting of the organization. It should list the organization's assets, annual income and expenses (balance sheet and operating statement). This can best be provided by sending the latest 12-month auditor's report, including all notes to financial statements, and supporting schedules.

Funding and Timing:

What is the average dollar amount of grants approved for funding?   (top)

The majority of the Foundation's grants are in the $10,000 to $15,000 range. Grant sizes range from $200,000 to $1,000.

What are your funding priorities?   (top)

The Foundation has no official funding priorities, as such; but considers any properly submitted application that does not violate its restrictions. However, the Raskob Foundation takes interest in projects in which self-help and local support are demonstrated. Applications to the Foundation are considered on their merits. Need and the good to be accomplished are the prime considerations.

When will we be notified of the results of the Foundation's funding decisions?   (top)

Grantees will be notified regarding funding decisions approximately 12-16 weeks after the spring or fall submission deadline.

General:

Can we meet with a Member of the Foundation or its Staff to discuss our proposal?   (top)

Meetings or phone conversations with members of the staff of the Foundation may be requested and, if feasible, will be arranged. In some cases meetings with Members of the Foundation may be arranged. However, the personal schedules and privacy of the Members limit their ability to conduct meetings. In some cases, Members of the Foundation may request a meeting or phone conversation when they are reviewing applications.
